What Are the Signs That You Need a Root Canal?

Beautiful-smile

Are you concerned because you have a toothache that will not go away? If so, it could be a sign that you need a root canal. A root canal takes place if there is infected tissue underneath the surface of your enamel.

A dentist may need to infiltrate your tooth, remove the infected material, replace it with a composite, and give you a chance to recover. Even though there are a lot of people who are concerned if they hear that they need a root canal, the sooner you seek dental care, the faster you can recover.

At Aria Dental, it would be our pleasure to help you take care of your teeth, and this includes a root canal. How do you know if you need one?

1. Pain That Will Not Go Away

One of the most common signs that you may require a root canal is persistent pain that simply will not go away. Even though the pain may wax and wane with time, if it never truly goes away, it is a sign that you might need a root canal.

Of course, there are other possible reasons why you might have a severe toothache that will not go away. You may have referred pain from a sinus infection, or you may have severe gum disease.

Regardless, if you have a toothache that will not seem to go away, it could be a sign that you may need a root canal.

2. A Discolored Tooth

There are lots of people who have stained teeth due to coffee, tea, and soda.

On the other hand, it is highly unusual to have a single tooth that is a different color from the other teeth if that is the case, it could be a sign that you have infected pulp underneath the surface of your tooth.

If the pulp is infected, you may need a root canal to address the issue. It would be our pleasure to help you with that problem.

3. Hypersensitivity To Hot and Cold Temperatures

Without a doubt, one of the most common signs that you may need a root canal is hypersensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

When you drink something hot, or if you bite into something cold, you may feel a shock go through the tooth and into the gum tissue. This is a sign that you have inflammation underneath the surface of your tooth, and it could be irritating the nerve.

If that is the case, you might need a root canal to address the issue. We would be happy to help you with that.

4. Hypersensitivity To Touch

Just as you may have hypersensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, you may also have hypersensitivity to touch.

For example, you may accidentally bump your tooth with your fork when you are eating. Or, you may accidentally touch your tooth awkwardly when you rush.

Ordinarily, it should not be a problem, but if your pulp is infected, you may feel a shock go through your tooth, radiating into your gums and jaw tissue. In that situation, you may require a root canal, and it would be our pleasure to assist you.

5. Swollen Gum Tissue

Finally, you may also notice that you have swollen gum tissue around a painful tooth. Gum swelling may come and go, but if you lightly touch the gum tissue, it might swell up relatively quickly.

This is a sign that your gum tissue is irritated, and it could be irritated because the pulp underneath the tooth has gotten infected. Swelling can also take place because acidic waste products from dead pulp cells could be deposited underneath the gum tissue, leading to swelling.

You might even notice a little pimple on your gum, which is typically called a parulis. This could be a sign that you need a root canal to clean out the tooth.

Dr Mustafa and his staff are wonderful! He was able to see me right away for major tooth pain that led to the extraction of 3 wisdom teeth, and for a very reasonable price I might add. He walked me thru each step and made me feel comfortable. I was so nervous but his funny and calming spirit really helped me get thru the procedure. Dr Mustafa is not my regular dentist; I was referred to him by my dentist due to scheduling conflict but highly considering switching! I was a new patient but was treated so well that I felt like I had been going for years. Thank you again for helping me with my pain, Dr Mustafa & crew!
